## What Is Activated Carbon?

Activated carbon is a highly porous material produced by heating carbon-rich feedstock — coconut shell, coal or wood — with steam or gas to create millions of microscopic pores. One gram of activated carbon has a surface area of roughly **800–1,500 m²**, enough to adsorb gold cyanide complexes, chlorine, VOCs and other contaminants from liquids and gases. YELI Carbon manufactures all four commercial formats — granular (GAC), powdered (PAC), extruded pellet (EAC) and honeycomb — at our own factory in Longyan, Fujian, China, with a COA issued for every batch.

## Coconut Shell vs Coal vs Wood: Which Feedstock?

**Coconut shell** carbon is the hardest and densest, with a fine micro-pore structure that suits gold recovery — typical hardness **96–99%** by the ball-pan method (ASTM D3802). **Coal-based** carbon is cheaper but softer (**90–95%** hardness) with a wider pore distribution, which means more attrition fines in a gold CIP circuit. **Wood-based** carbon is light and low-density, best for liquid-phase decolorization where mechanical strength matters less. For gold CIP/CIL duty, coconut shell is the industry standard; for general water and air treatment, coal and wood offer a cost-effective fit.
